Chain drive to the tandems and rear wheels came from two PDUs via a transmission unit comprising a centrifugal clutch, 2-speed and reverse gearbox and spur-gear differential (below, right). Steering was by rack-and-pinion. The other functions - mouldboard rotation and height adjustment (the left and right arms working independently or together), scarifier raise/lower and front wheel lean, were all operated by a single rotating shaft running from the cab into the main frame. Sliding the shaft forwards or backwards engaged gears driving the different functions (far left).

Builder's comment: The model was built in atonement for one that I built at 11 but never finished (see Meccano 14G). Even the latter model was a rather arthritic; perhaps over-ambitious for its scale. It has sad associations; I was working on it late on the catastrophic night of October 15th. 1987, but paid little heed to the noise of wind howling outside. |
