Hathorn Davey Triple Expansion Steam Engine | |
Built: 1996 | The only known Meccano model of the Kew Bridge Steam Museum's famous centrepiece. |
In the 1:6 scale model, some MecaRep- modified parts were necessary to reproduce all the actions and sounds of the valve gear. ►
A reverse worm on the top end of vertical governor shaft drove the camshaft, allowing the governor to spin in the correct direction at a realistic speed. The main crankshaft was driven from below via the crown wheel which, through a second right-angle drive, powered the governor shaft.
The three underfloor mains water pumps, originally included in the model, were removed after they were discovered to have been a figment of the builders' imagination!
The pumps were driven by pushrods mounted on the crossheads passing vertically downwards on either side of the crankshaft, allowing the crankshaft itself to be relatively light. |

Builder's comment: Exhibited several times alongside the prototype at the Magic of Meccano exhibition, the model was eventually retired to MW Models' showcase.
